Denmark’s PM urges US to stop threatening “historically close ally”
“We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense,” Trump told The Atlantic on Sunday, while noting that broader implications of US military actions in Venezuela were for others to decide.
Frederiksen responded firmly, stating, “the US has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Kingdom.” She added, “I would therefore strongly urge the US to stop the threats against a historically close ally and against another country and another people who have very clearly said that they are not for sale.”
Trump initially proposed purchasing Greenland in 2019, a plan promptly rejected by both Copenhagen and Greenlandic authorities. Since his return to office, he has revived the idea and even hinted at possible military measures.
Denmark has countered by strengthening Arctic defenses and expanding both military and civilian monitoring, treating the US pressure as a direct challenge to its sovereignty. Trump later commented aboard Air Force One, claiming Greenland is “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships” and suggesting that Denmark could not adequately address the “threat,” while noting Copenhagen had bolstered security by adding “one more dog sled.”
