US, Denmark to Hold Talks on Greenland

(MENAFN) American and Danish officials are scheduled to meet this week to discuss Greenland, as Washington intensifies efforts to gain control of the strategically important Arctic territory currently under Denmark’s sovereignty, according to media reports on Sunday citing diplomatic sources.

The meeting, planned for Wednesday, was reported by a news agency and comes after remarks last week from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who allegedly informed Congress in a closed session that President Donald Trump was interested in purchasing the Danish territory.

On Tuesday, the White House stated that officials were reviewing a wide range of options to secure Greenland, including the potential use of military force.

Senator Tim Kaine, who recently met with Danish representatives, said Sunday he expects bipartisan opposition to any military attempt to seize Greenland.

“We're not going to do it the hard way, and we're not going to do it the easy way,” he remarked, referencing an earlier statement by Trump.

He added: “Either we're going to continue to work with Denmark as a sovereign nation that we're allied with, and we're not going to treat them as an adversary or as an enemy.”

Since a January 3 military operation aimed at capturing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the Trump administration has adopted stronger rhetoric about “acquiring” Greenland, insisting that such a move is vital for US national security.

On Friday, leaders of Greenland’s political parties reaffirmed their rejection of joining the United States, declaring: “We do not want to be Americans, we do not want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders.”
