Danish PM warns of critical moment as Trump targets Greenland
Frederiksen made the remarks during a panel discussion at the Social Liberal Party’s New Year gathering in Nyborg on Sunday. When asked whether Denmark has a concrete plan should the US attempt military action against Greenland, she refrained from detailing specific measures, saying the issue needs to be addressed at a deeper, more fundamental level, as stated by reports.
“What is at stake is bigger than what the eye can see, because if what we are experiencing from the American side is that one is in reality turning one’s back on the Western alliance, turning one’s back on our NATO cooperation by threatening an ally, something we have not experienced before, then everything stops there.”
Trump has indicated that Washington will “do something about Greenland,” adding that if it does not happen “the easy way,” it will happen “the hard way,” while claiming that China or Russia might otherwise gain control of the Arctic territory, as reported by sources.
Frederiksen also mentioned an upcoming meeting between the foreign ministers of the US, Denmark, and Greenland, aimed at clearly asserting the Danish realm’s position. “There are things we cannot compromise on,” she said. “In our time, there will be moments where you can only choose between what is right and what is wrong, and this is one of them.”
Greenlandic leaders have echoed these concerns, issuing a joint statement rejecting the notion of joining the United States and emphasizing that the island’s future must be determined by its own population. “We do not want to be Americans, we do not want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders,” the statement said.
