Trump Addresses Reason Why US Must Acquire Greenland

(MENAFN) On Sunday, President Donald Trump asserted that the United States must take possession of Greenland to stop Russia or China from seizing influence over the strategically important Arctic territory belonging to Denmark.

He told journalists aboard Air Force One, traveling from Florida to Washington, DC: “If we don't take Greenland, Russia or China will take Greenland, and I am not going to let that happen ... but one way or the other, we're going to have Greenland.”

Trump emphasized that Greenland should accept such an arrangement for the sake of its own protection and long-term stability. “Greenland should make the deal, because Greenland does not want to see Russia or China take over,” he remarked.

The president clarified that he is not considering a short-term setup, such as leasing land, but rather a lasting acquisition. “We're talking about acquiring, not leasing, not having it short-term. We're talking about acquiring. If we don't do it, Russia or China will, and that's not going to happen when I'm president,” he declared.

Pointing to the current US military installations already located on Greenland, Trump insisted that the country requires “more than that.” He concluded: “You need ownership ... You really need title.”
