Artist uses last letters from Denmark’s postal service for art

(MENAFN) An artist is collecting the final letters sent through Denmark’s centuries-old postal system to create an art installation.

PostNord, Denmark’s national postal service, stopped delivering letters in December due to falling demand and now only handles parcels. The artist, Gillian Taylor, is using the last postcards and letters sent to her for an installation titled Med Venlig Hilsen (With Kind Regards), which will be displayed at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton, Devon, in May.

Taylor invited Danes to write to her one final time to commemorate the end of the Danish letter service. PostNord had announced in March that it would discontinue letter delivery by the end of 2025.

Taylor, originally from Devon but previously based in Copenhagen, said: "PostNord ending their delivery of letters and removing the post boxes feels like such a significant moment that I wanted to mark it by creating some art."

She encouraged people to send letters and cards in Danish or English. "There's all sorts of things people have written about. There's a wonderful one someone has written about her childhood memories of her mum reading letters aloud," she said. She has also received pictures, cards, and a map showing the last three post boxes in a specific area.

In addition, the Royal Danish Library has allowed Taylor to include copies of letters sent by Hans Christian Andersen to Charles Dickens in her work. Andersen is best known for his fairy tales, including The Little Mermaid, The Snow Queen, and The Ugly Duckling.

Taylor asked participants to send their contributions to a PO Box address. Karen Elberg, who sent a letter from Denmark, commented: "It was very strange, because I last wrote one 20 years ago. You write things in a letter that you wouldn't put in an email and the reply is so slow."
