Study Reveals Majority of Europeans Perceive Threats

(MENAFN) A recent survey reveals that over two-thirds of Europeans consider their country to be under threat, while many express confidence in the European Union’s ability to enhance defense and security.

The Flash Eurobarometer, conducted in early January across the EU’s 27 member states, found that 68% of respondents perceive their nation as facing potential threats. France registered the highest threat perception at 80%, followed by the Netherlands and Denmark at 77%, and both Germany and the Greek Cypriot Administration at 75%. Meanwhile, 42% of Europeans reported concerns about their personal safety.

Despite these concerns, 52% of respondents said they trust the EU to strengthen security and defense, with the highest confidence levels in Luxembourg (76%), Portugal (74%), the Greek Cypriot Administration (73%), and Lithuania (71%).

Support for defense spending remains robust. Nearly three-quarters of participants (74%) either endorse current EU defense investments or favor increasing them. Countries showing the strongest backing for higher or sustained spending included Portugal (89%), Finland (83%), Lithuania (80%), Spain (80%), and Denmark (78%).

The survey also emphasized the perceived importance of EU space policy in addressing security concerns. Some 53% of respondents identified security and defense as a top priority, followed by environmental and climate issues (36%) and competitiveness and industrial growth (31%).
