UN Security Council Refutes Russian Draft Resolution on Mideast Casualties

(MENAFN) The United Nations Security Council failed to pass a Russian-led draft resolution intended to mourn the “tragic loss of life throughout the ongoing hostilities” in the Middle East, according to reports.

The proposal, submitted by Russia, received support from four members—Russia, China, Somalia, and Pakistan—while the United States and Latvia voted against it. Nine members abstained, including the UK, France, Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Denmark, Greece, Liberia, and Panama.

The resolution expressed “deep concern over the current military escalation in the Middle East and beyond” and mourned lives lost in the region. Without naming any specific country, it urged all parties to immediately halt military actions and condemned “all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure.”

Russia’s UN envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, strongly criticized the vote, describing it as “a litmus test, an invitation to show your true colors.” He called the outcome “surreal” and “a disgrace,” arguing that opposition to the draft was “dictated purely by their short-term political interests, block solidarity, and the fear that they might fall out of favor with their elder friends,” which he said weakened the “authority of the Council.”

US envoy to the UN Mike Waltz responded by stating that “the Russian Federation knew it did not have the votes to adopt its resolution today, yet it insisted on proceeding to a vote.” He added, “Once again, Russia is acting here at the Security Council to protect its partner Iran,” rejecting “Russia's attempt to conflate lawful US actions taken in line with Article 51 of the UN Charter.”
