Denmark Says Greenland Security Deal Expands NATO Role in Arctic
The agreement is expected to be signed Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, although its specific provisions have not yet been disclosed.
Rasmussen said the arrangement would establish a framework in which Arctic security would no longer rest solely with Denmark and the United States.
“It (the agreement) will be in a form where responsibility for security in the Arctic is not only Danish or American,” Rasmussen told national broadcaster on Sunday.
He said NATO would have a significant role under the proposed arrangement, adding that “it would be NATO that looks after the Arctic.”
The Danish foreign minister did not provide further information about the contents of the deal.
However, he said Denmark had consistently indicated its willingness to address Washington’s security concerns in the region.
“But we have said from the start that we are open to accommodating the United States’ legitimate security interests,” he told Danish news agency Ritzau on Monday.
US President Donald Trump has presented a different description of the planned arrangement. In a Truth Social post on Friday, he said the agreement would provide Washington with “permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland.”
Trump also stated that any US adversary would be barred from establishing a military facility or maintaining a military presence in Greenland unless Washington provided written authorization.
